Event Details
Here’s what actually happens on a Chequered Flag teambuilding event
First, your team brainstorms what your “Racing Machine” is going to look like. The best-looking construction (according to the panel of judges) is awarded Pole Position for the racing Finale later on.
Once you’ve agreed what it’s going to look like, you have to gather everything you possibly can to turn your dream machine into reality. You’re given a certain amount of resources – including the solid structure of the basic kart – in your starter kit.
Your team procures more resources by pitching a successful Sponsorship Bid. Your bid will include how your machine will look, what your branding will be and why you think your team is going to win your Company Grand Prix.
This particular part of Chequered Flag is very adaptable. Normally your whole group acts as the audience to each team’s pitch which they present to the Sponsors. Everyone finds this extremely funny. Your company may also like to recreate a particular feel, for example, Dragon’s Den or the X-Factor.
The more successful your bid the more money your team earns to spend on materials for the construction of your “Racing Machine” and any spares you might want for the Pits.
When you build your dream machine your aim is to impress the judges who will award one team Pole Position and this gives your team the best chance of winning the Finale race at the end.
Benefits
What difference does it make back in the office to people who’ve taken part in Chequered Flag ?
Teams realise that the only way to win Chequered Flag is to use all the skills that they’ve got in their team. Just like Formula One the roles of designer, mechanic and driver are all critical. The ability to be flamboyant, persuasive and articulate is also useful. In addition someone needs to ensure that planning is meticulous.
The key is to use the best people in your team in the Chequered Flag role that they’re best at. The result is that team members learn a lot about each other because these skills are often different to those that they normally see in the office.
Teams also experiment with new methods of working because the environment is safe and non-threatening. The leader back in the office is not necessarily the boss when it comes to making the most extraordinary looking kart.
Teams lose their inhibitions because everyone’s having such fun. The focus is on the challenge of building a winning kart rather than a winning team but the result is the same.
The outcome is that your team becomes more motivated and more united. In the end it doesn’t matter whether your team wins the final race or not because everyone’s had a fantastic day.
